ADVOCACY
At NEHP, there are many issues within the field of performance that are of critical importance to us. Therefore, we volunteer our time and regularly donate resources to support the following causes. If you are interested in helping to support our advocacy work, please contact us below!
LGBTQ+ Issues in Performance
One of our founders currently volunteers on the CLRG board and AASP special interest group working to address LGBTQ+ issues in sport, performance and Irish Dance. He also works closely on a volunteer basis with dance schools and other organizations seeking to develop their support systems for athletes struggling to cope with related concerns. This work tends to focus on inclusion, support of and advocating for trans/non-binary athletes, but the scope is extremely broad.

Women's Rights in Sport and Life
In today's society the unequal or unfair treatment of women is a harsh and common reality. While we cannot change the events of the past, NEHP believes the key to growth and preventing future misconduct lies in education. Through this approach we can build awareness and sensitivity to the issues and ensure that we are all aware of our power to break the cycle. We regularly host free meetings and informational sessions for young men to help them understand the importance of their actions, and provide free resources and group sessions to help those in positions of power to understand their ability to influence those around them and create change in this area.

Eating Disorders in Sport & The Arts
Disordered eating is alarmingly common in dance and athletics, with some studies placing rates in this population at up to five times the national average. One of our co-founders currently volunteers as a coordinator for the AASP special interest group for eating disorders in athletes, regularly collaborates with NEDA and works closely with dance schools nationally to help identify and mitigate organizational risk factors. He also is engaged in research that aims to identify the reasons for these issues so that we can reduce the number of developing cases in the future. NEHP hosts regular free seminars on this subject.

Mental Health in Sport and Performance
Performers and those who are regularly exposed to high pressure or stress environments are at an elevated risk for depressive disorders, anxiety disorders, eating disorders and PTSD. Those who manage this pressure effectively, however, see huge spikes in performance and may be at a lower risk for mental health concerns. NEHP is involved in ongoing research to better understand this discrepancy and how we can reduce or manage mental health risks across performance fields. NEHP also hosts regular free mental health seminars for performers and those who work with them.

Psychological Support for Injured Performers
Performers overcoming an injury often struggle with identity, mindset and mental health concerns as they tend to be quickly removed from their support network and, often, closest friends. In a split second, they become unable to participate in their favorite activities and are faced with a difficult road to get back to the level of performance they expect from themselves. NEHP offers free workshops for coaches and parent/guardians to build understanding of the risks associated with this and is available to help athletes in their road towards recovery.
